The first residents of the Wedgwood Development in Washington Township formed the WedgWood Women's Club in March 1966. The meetings were held in the homes of the fifteen club members. One original member, Miki Venuti, is still active.
Since 1966 all of the various women's clubs in Washington Township merged taking the name of the WedgWood Women's Club. Since its inception, the club expanded to include all of Washington Township and the surrounding areas. The members of the club have been key people in the development of Washington Township, and have included educational, business and civic leaders in the community. The membership has grown more than ten times, but the purpose has stayed the same...We work together not only for the charitable interests but also for the friendships.
Over the 53 years, the club has given over 500 food baskets, along with a gift certificate to a food store, to families who needed a hand at Christmas time, adopted families who needed a little help during the holidays, supported Washington Township High School's events, sports teams, Chamber Choir, ROTC, supported Mother's Matter, given to the Toys for Tots Campaign for 18 years, supported "Mainstage" and many other charitable organizations. The club has always tried to help when possible... have always given back to the community throughout the years.
Through the years, the club has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to high school seniors of Washington Township, $84,000 in scholarships awarded to women returning to school to attend Rowan College at Gloucester County, along with $24,000 in book money to go along with the scholarships. With great pride an Endowment Scholarship Fund- $20,000 with Rowan College at Gloucester County was established, which allows an award of a $1,000 scholarship each year. We are following two women through Rowan University.
In the past 53 years, the meeting place of the club has been moved 10 times, Spring and Fall Crafts Shows were held for 18 years, an Easter Egg Hunt was held for 32 years, Lunch with Santa is still going strong after 49 years, and Designer Bingo was held 10 times. There has also been Night at the Races, Fashion Shows, Mother and Daughter Fashion Shows, Art Auctions, Murder Mystery Dinners, and participated in the Washington Township Parade decorating a float, winning almost every year.
The club is a nonprofit, has incorporated 2 times, holds 4 different bank accounts, held 500 General Meetings, 500 Executive Meetings, approximately 300 day trips, 13 (2-3) day trips, 9 (3-4) day bus trips, 1 8-day trip to Savanna/Charleston, 1 Bermuda cruise, 2 Caribbean cruises, and 1 European River Cruise.
